When Your 17-Year Old Son Was Arrested and The World Wants to Know More

The focus on the sports page was on the availability of Torii Hunter to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim rather than the charges in the arrest of the son of Torii Hunter.  It is hard enough for an athlete to be thrust into the national spotlight for his everyday job.
Harder still is when the private lives of the Hunter family are now thrown open –through court proceedings — for all the world to see.

Four individuals were arrested for second degree sexual assault of a child on Monday stemming from a one-month long investigation. Two juveniles along with 17 year-old Darius McClinton-Hunter as well as 17 year-old Garrick White were arrested for Sexual Assault of a Child; one remaining juvenile was arrested for Unlawful Restraint of a Child, which is a State Jail Felony. Sexual Assault of a Child is a 2nd Degree Felony in Texas.

The NBC affiliate in Dallas reported that Darius McClinton was arrested on his way to school Monday morning. Forty-year-old Lanika McClinton, Darius McClinton’s mom, was also arrested today on a misdemeanor charge of driving with an invalid a license. She, her son, and White were all booked in to the Collin County jail. And Torii Hunter has taken a personal leave from his team.

In a news release, it was stated that the identities of the victims as well as juveniles “are held strictly confidential, as this is still an active investigation.” Consistent with applicable state laws, including but not limited to, the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Town of Prosper Police Department will not provide additional comments or responses regarding any case that is under active investigation.

Lanika McClinton will also be thrown into a spotlight in a manner more than she ever anticipated.

Arrest affidavits will have more information on Tuesday. Other news organization refer to the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl. The Dallas Morning News has reported that prosecutors allege the five Prosper High School boys formed a club where they would invite girls over, give them drugs and have sex with them. In a hearing at the Collin County Courthouse for the juveniles arrested, the prosecutor contend that as part of what was called “Team Snapback,” the accused would drug girls to have sex with them; one juvenile was accused of helping drag a girl into a closet, where prosecutors say Darius McClinton-Hunter forced her to have oral sex. It has been reported the hearing today did not involve Darius McClinton-Hunter and Garrick White, as seventeen-year-olds, who would be tried as adults, for similar allegations.

There was a personal cost when you were thrust into the limelight. When kids never asked to be children of the celebrated. It is noted that the baseball writers in the various sports media have not delved into the nature of the crime. From a standard of journalism, it does not say much for sportswriters’ concern of the public interest, when private lives of someone they know enter the public arena, beyond the publicly financed stadiums. There was a conflict when you tried to respect a private life. And more conflict when you tried to be too accommodating.

  2. It is of note that by October 2012 that Darius McClinton had enrolled and was playing linebacker for Copperas Cove Bulldawgs, with 64 tackles by mid-October. That item reflects a transfer out of Prosper High School. It is of note the Collin County District Attorney’s Office has yet to file charges despite the arrest on sexual assault charges in May 2012 of two juveniles along with Darius McClinton-Hunter and Garrick White. While Prosper police say they are still investigating the case, until the outcome of where the country attorney files a summons and complaint with the court, the NBC affiliate has reported that McClinton-Hunter cannot attend Prosper High School for his senior year. The Collin County District Attorney claims that because he has not seen the files on the case, he cannot make a decision about whether it will prosecute. The real question is why he has not taken the time to examine the file by now. Someone in Collin County has by now a fairly good idea, beyond a reasonable doubt, if this case will ever be tried.

The pitfalls of the old model of the 19th century slavery seem to linger in Texas. As the noveau riche move into exclusive suburbs, and the past bigotry affects the political climate of the district attorney. Institutional advancement in Texas was a slow and cumbersome process in this cowboy culture from the US. Many were experts at talking the talk, but not changing their own lives — maybe attributed to a built up immunity to Old World theology, about slavery, as some kind of remnant of a slave culture. White kings who somehow had allowed slavery. As the slaves over time had become dependent on their slave masters. I never particularly liked Torii Hunter as a ball player, due to the superficial public persona that he himself has projected. The arrest of his firstborn son has changed the way I think about the man as the bleeding from his wounds become so apparent, when private matters affect the public life of a ballplayer.

The origin of Darius McClinton’s family in the Flint, Michigan area also explains a lot about why Torii Hunter signed with the Detroit Tigers.
