Sneaks and Sneakers

Vengeance. A woman scored. An official from the athletic wear company Puma confirmed they are in “internal discussions” to sign Elin Nordegren as a spokesperson for a new Swedish-inspired clothing line called Tretorn.

Things that ring hollow. The apology on the Tiger Woods’ website. Not to his spouse. But to his “family.” The guy just does not get human relationships. Apparently, Nike does not either.

In an interview in the Sports Business Journal, Nike chairman and co-founder Phil Knight said: “When his career is over, you’ll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip. But the media is making a big deal out of it right now.”

To a question about Tiger Woods and this episode of extramarital infidelity, whether this changed the concept of building brands around athletes? Phil Knight said, “Not for us. It’s part of the game.”

For now, Nike continues to stand by their man, Tiger Woods. in a world where it is good to be fast. The “do it” company. Phil Knight did not say whether Nike would drop Woods as the face of the company. It’s part of the competition. Part of the game. When it is good to play fast. Where everybody loves a winner.

THIS UPDATE: Puma denied that they ever approached Elin to represent Tretorn. It might have made a good story. In the world of brand names. In the battle between the faced vs. the faceless. Brand names and high profile professional athletes. In a world of sneaks and sneakers. Where women did most of the choosing.
